What percentage of the population achieves all their goals? Let’s make this easier- ask the next 12 people you meet what their New Years Resolution was at the start of the year, then ask “Have you achieved it?”

If goal setting works you should get 12 achievers- right? Did you achieve yours? I know, the economy isn’t ideal, and your spouse didn’t do this and your business wasn’t in the right position. New Years Resolutions are the one time of the year nearly everyone sets goals, yet 95% of NYR are never achieved. I rest my case - Goal Setting doesn’t work!

But what about some of the fantastic acronyms you can come up with to sell goal setting? CREATE your Outcomes
C - Clear
R - Realistic
E - Ecological
A - As now
T - Timed
E - Evidence
That’s a lot of fun, but it’s not enough to quit smoking.
How about SMART Goals?
S - Specific
M - Measureable
A - Achievable
R - Realistic
T - Timed
Witty and wasteful. Let’s go further, to cutting edge Goal Setting. SMARTIE goals
S - Specific
M - Measurable
A - Achievable
R - Responsibility
T - Timed
I - Inspirational
E - Emotional
Let’s wrap all these funky acronyms into a pile and put it in the same bin we put our New Years Resolutions for the past 5 years. The problem is not with the acronyms. The problem is with the term itself- Goal Setting.

Goal setting conjures up images of expensive executive weekend retreats where we meditate, get whooped up by some motivational genius and discuss things like “If you couldn’t fail, what would you try?” Then, you go back to work on Monday and avoid eye contact with that person bonded with so well on the weekend after your fourth bottle of red. Nothing changes, and that’s the problem.

Goal setting has no requirement for the one element that will take you wherever you want to go - ACTION.

Goal Getting is the new buzz word. You can ‘set’ all you want but if you don’t ‘get’ you’ll eventually end up giving up on your disillusioned dreams.

I don’t have a trendy acronym for you- at least not yet. So here’s the process to get goals in 4 easy steps!

Decide what you want and why you want it.

Find out what you need to do to get what you want.

Choose - either do it or don’t do it

Take ACTION!

What are you looking forward to at the moment? I know you probably can’t wait for the alarm to go off at 4.45am tomorrow morning, or that 12 hour day you have scheduled next week, or the “smash session” heavy training day you have booked for yourself, but when are you taking a break?

When we are building or running successful businesses it’s possible to fall into the trap of believing you don’t have time to take a break. Or perhaps you don’t have the money for an expensive holiday. Nonetheless it’s imperative to have something booked that you can look forward to, and it needn’t cost you the earth. The benefit of taking time off is invaluable.

Every genius throughout history claims they came up with the theory of relativity or solution to a problem during a time of relaxation, not necessarily while being caught up in the “Thick of it”. When we are relaxing we do our best creative work. During the downtime we solve problems, overcome issues and create solutions. You will know from personal experience a time when you come up with a brilliant creation whilst you were relaxing. At WYN we call them “Shower Thoughts”. Ideas we come up with when taking a shower and not even thinking about work.

Your holiday may be a trip overseas, and long weekend, or perhaps just a well deserved sleep in and massage. Make sure you always have one booked and you’ll always feel there’s a light at the end of the tunnel.

We are constantly supported by past WYN students and friends who send us new students- and ask for nothing in return. Now we want to give you something for spreading our good name. Any referral you give us puts you in the draw to win a $2000 Travel Voucher to go wherever you want, whenever you want with whoever you want. Plus, if your friend enrols in a course with us, they go into a separate draw to win their own $2000 travel voucher.

Sounds too good to be true? Check out the WYN website or call (03) 9779 3772 for more details.

Is it better to be fat and fit or skinny and unfit?

Well here’s some research you may be interested in…

Despite concerns about an obesity epidemic, there is growing evidence that our obsession about weight as a primary measure of health may be misguided. A report in The Archives of Internal Medicine compared weight and cardiovascular risk factors among a representative sample of more than 5,400 adults.

The data suggests that half of overweight people and one-third of obese people are ‘metabolically healthy‘. That means that despite their excess pounds, many overweight and obese adults have healthy levels of “good” cholesterol, blood pressure, blood glucose and other risks for heart disease.

At the same time, about one out of four slim people — those who fall into the ‘healthy’ weight range — actually have at least two cardiovascular risk factors typically associated with obesity, the study showed.

In several studies, the researchers have shown that people who are fat but can still keep up on treadmill tests have much lower heart risk than people who are slim and unfit.

In December, a study in The Journal of the American Medical Association looked at death rates among 2,600 adults 60 and older over 12 years. Notably, death rates among the overweight, those with a B.M.I. of 25 to 30, were slightly lower than in normal weight adults. Death rates were highest among those with a B.M.I. of 35 or more.

Stephen Blair, a co-author of the study and a professor at the Arnold School of Public Health at the University of South Carolina, said the lesson he took from the study was that instead of focusing only on weight loss, doctors should be talking to all patients about the value of physical activity, regardless of body size.

‘Why is it such a stretch of the imagination,’ he said, ‘to consider that someone overweight or obese might actually be healthy and fit?’”

Here’s a quick quiz for you. You don’t have to send in a response or email or even answer out loud. This is a quiet quiz.

Ready?

Can you name the last 3 Nobel Peace Prize winners?

How about the last 3 Brownlow Medal winners?

Any 3 Miss Australia winners?

The last 3 Melbourne Cup winners?

If you’re anything like me you have struggled with some or all of the answers, and yet these people (or horses) reached the absolute top of their chosen field. Some of them have contributed to the well being and happiness of 1000’s of people, and yet we forget them as quickly as they are announced.

Let’s try another quiz.

Can you remember 3 teachers from school that made a real impact on you?

Can you remember 3 friends who made an effort to help you out of a tough spot?

Can you recognize 3 family members who you will never be able to fully express your appreciation for the difference they have made in your life?

Isn’t that interesting?

The people who make the most difference in our lives, the hero’s who are most memorable are not necessarily the ones who win awards. They don’t get applauded by 1000’s and written up in magazines and newspapers.

Our hero’s, who make a difference, are often the one’s closest to us who simply do what they do day in, day out.

So here’s two challenges.

Firstly, thank your hero’s, give them a little recognition.

Secondly, what are you doing to be a hero for someone else?

Where do you spend your time? Do you waste your time?

Do you spend your time and energy thinking and acting on projects or items you can change, or do you whittle away your hours on things you have no control over?

Stephen Covey refers to the concept of Two Circles. The large circle is called your “Circle of Concern“. In this Circle of Concern are all of the things that are of concern to you. For example, your health, world peace, what you are going to eat for lunch, whether your train will be on time, and so on.

Within your Circle of Concern is a smaller circle. It is called your “Circle of Influence“. In your Circle of Influence are all the things that you can influence such as your health or what you are going to eat for lunch.

Covey suggests that Highly Effective People live within their “Circle of Influence” not their “Circle of Concern”.

If we spend our time worrying, gossiping and stressing about the things we have no influence over, we are wasting our time.

Some of you may ask, “But what about world peace? It’s OK to think about that.” Of course it is, but wouldn’t it be better to think about what you can do today, tomorrow and every day which can influence world peace?

Too many of us get stressed about things in our life we can’t influence or can’t be bothered influencing. Too many of us would rather gossip at the water fountain about what someone else is doing instead of going to the cause of the problem and trying to resolve it. It’s easier to find supporters to validate your ideas than it is to try to do something to change the status quo.

If we spent most, if not all of our time in our Circle of Influence something magical happens…IT GROWS!

If you become the person with the solution, not the whinger, people will come to you for guidance.

If you think above and beyond what is required you will become more valuable, and hence people will pay more money to have you around.

If you think about what you can do, rather than point the finger at what others are not doing, you could make a difference. Heavens,…maybe even world peace!

An Interesting Concept - Finding Space for Success in Your Life!

Answer me this - Do you have enough space for Success in Your Life?

What I mean is, do you have time in your life when you are able to ponder? So many of us are so busy in “the thick of thin things” as Stephen Covey puts it, or “majoring in the minors” according to Tony Robbins that we don’t have time to wonder what is possible. The time we take to sit and dream can pay us enormous dividends. It’s when we stop having conversations with the voices in our heads (yes, we all have them) that creativity has the opportunity to take place.

Remember Pavlov’s dog? There is a gap between stimulus (the bell ringing), and response (the dog salivating) where we humans have the opportunity to choose. Do you recognize that gap? Being able to choose our response, rather than reacting (or over reacting) to any situation is what separates us from animals.

Are you choosing wisely or simply responding the way you’ve always responded? That gap can make all the difference. Have you heard the saying “if you always do what you’ve always done, you’ll always get what you’ve always got.”

If you’re happy with what you’re getting keep doing what you’re doing. If you want better results, take a moment… Ever considered a career in the fitness and health industry?

What’s so important about making a difference?
Consider the alternative. How would feel about a career that doesn’t benefit anyone? A job (justify our breathing) that you turn up to each day, doing the same stuff, with mediocre outcomes? Sounds fairly uninspiring doesn’t it?

The health and fitness industry is making a difference.
As a personal fitness trainer or massage therapist you can change people’s lives - for the better! Make a difference by helping people take control of their lives, losing weight, gaining strength, avoiding cardiovascular disease, having more energy and relieving stress.

Making a difference is what will inspire you to get up each day!

Personal trainers make a difference every day inspiring their clients to exercise harder, with better direction, better exercise selection, and ultimately better results. Massage therapists make a difference every day with their clients releasing tight muscles, avoiding pain and injury and reducing stress.Full time personal trainers and massage therapists enjoy a lifestyle and a purpose for life that few other careers can offer.

So where do you go to get a career, not just a qualification? Which educational facility will “Make a difference” for you?
WYN Training stands for “What You Need”. Courses have been designed with career outcomes so our graduates are successful in the health and fitness industry. Graduates from WYN work in every major health club chain, small facility and sporting organisation in Australia. Many graduates take their skills abroad.

So what does WYN do that guarantees your success? Classes are available at four campuses in Victoria, plus South Australia and NSW. Full time courses can get you industry ready in eight weeks as a personal trainer or nine weeks as a massage therapist. Part time courses are available to work around other study or working commitments. Classes have a maximum number of 16 students each. This means you get 200% more attention from your lecturers than the industry average.

Finally they have the MAD Training System (Making A Difference). An integrated approach to changing someone’s behavior and actions to give them the results they want. It’s that attention to detail that makes the difference.
